Few places offer the opportunity to summit a country’s highest peak in one day. Volcán San Cristóbal offered such a rare opportunity. From its peak, the Pacific Ocean, sugar cane crops and peanut fields looked minuscule below. Not only can you reach its apex, but it is humbling to set foot atop one of the more active volcanoes in the region. The pain and the pleasure remain etched in my memory.
