Big animals bring big swigs of adrenalin. I recollect sitting inside a Land Rover in Southern Malawi when a solitary male elephant decided to charge us. All the cells in my body felt momentarily stunned, unable to move beyond flicking my eyelids wide open.

Sometime in the middle of the night, my husband and I both awoke suddenly. We looked around, not sure what had startled us. We then heard a low snort a few metres away. This was followed by the sound of grass being pulled. Then a faint chewing sound grated over and over. Another sniff, but nearer. Whatever had come for an evening snack was approaching our tent.”
